The New ASU NMR Facility (coming Feb 2006)

As part of a $300,000,000 expansion of research space, in February 2006, the ASU NMR Facility will be moving to the new 188,000 sq. ft. Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building I. ISTB I will house the NMR Facility, a new ASU supercomputer facility, and 40 new faculty researchers in bioengineering, biochemistry, molecular biology and life sciences.

Construction and digging started in July 2004. To make room for high-field (800-900) MHz NMR spectrometers and magnets, the foundation will be dug down 25' below grade.

Sept 15, 2004

Excavation of the building is nearly complete, and the foundation walls were poured.

The foundation for the crane is in place.  The crane is at the southwest corner of the NMR laboratory. The footing forthe crane were poured well below the foundation and fiberglass rods are used throughout the foundation of the NMR facility.

Caissons have been dug, and the support columns for 1st floor are being constructed. For a sense of scale, columns are spaced 21' x 29'

Jan 5, 2005

The floor for the NMR lab is in. The floor is10" of high-strength fiberglass-reinforced concrete.

The Plaza and 1st floor are nearly finished. The NMR lab is nearly concealed. The NMR lab is located under an open-air Plaza immediately beyond the crane.

The building is being designed while under construction. The depth of the NMR lab created the potential for a mezzanine floor in the basement (seen in the bottom right photo, which shows the area directly south of the NMR lab).
